St. Voldymyr Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church

The roots of Ukrainian religious life in Waskatenau were shaped by early divisions between Catholic and Orthodox communities. In 1934, residents bought land for a church and burial grounds, but allegiances soon split. The Orthodox group, after securing a majority in 1940, established their own church, while the Catholics formed a separate congregation. Despite these tensions, both communities continued to grow, with the Orthodox St. Volodymyr’s Church completing a new building in 1954. In 1992, a bell tower was added to mark the centennial of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. These churches remain a vital part of Waskatenau’s heritage, reflecting the community's enduring faith and cultural roots.

Holy Spirit Parish, also known as Парафія Зіслання Святого Духа, is located between Radway and Smoky Lake. In 1941, 4 acres of land for a cemetery were donated by M. Diachyshyn. The church’s land was purchased in 1950 for $350, with construction starting shortly after. The cornerstone was blessed in June 1951, and the church was officially consecrated in 1970 by Bishop Neil Savaryn. The church, including a finished basement, cost $35,000 to build. The Parish started its branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League in 1974. Several Basilian Fathers served the community over the years, and various eparchial clergy provided services through the decades. The parish remains a key part of the local religious life.
